ANGELES CITY, Pampanga — In a major step toward sustainable urban development and environmental protection, Mayor Carmelo “Pogi” Lazatin, Jr. led the inauguration of Angeles City’s first city-funded wastewater treatment facility on June 17, located at the Pampang Public Market.
The newly opened facility is the second of its kind in the city but stands out as the first fully financed by the local government. The first treatment plant, located at the city’s slaughterhouse, was built through a joint venture agreement. This milestone highlights Mayor Lazatin’s ongoing commitment to investing in eco-friendly infrastructure under his administration.
Designed to transform wastewater into clean, reusable water, the new plant will help reduce water pollution originating from the bustling Pampang Public Market. The processed water can be reused for non-drinking purposes such as irrigation, industrial work, and sanitation — reducing both environmental impact and public expenses.
“This project is not only a solution for managing wastewater but also a key investment in the city’s environmental health,” Mayor Lazatin emphasized in his speech. He said the facility reflects the city’s long-term vision for sustainability and efficient public services.
The mayor also noted that the city government is continuing efforts to strengthen waste management policies across all 33 barangays. The focus remains on preventing solid waste from entering the city’s waterways and ensuring proper disposal at the source, especially in crowded commercial areas.
With the establishment of this facility, Angeles City enhances its capability to manage urban waste while simultaneously contributing to broader climate and water conservation goals. The local government expects that these initiatives will set a model for other cities aiming to achieve sustainable development.
Since taking office in 2019, Mayor Lazatin has prioritized environmental programs, and the opening of the Pampang wastewater treatment plant is another testament to his administration’s commitment to building a cleaner and healthier city.
