In response to a recent soil erosion incident along Sapangbato Creek in Barangay Sapangbato, Angeles City Mayor Carmelo “Jon” Lazatin II personally visited the affected site early this morning to assess the situation. The inspection focused on the area near Bliss, where a section of the creek’s embankment had collapsed, posing a potential hazard to nearby residents.
Following the site visit, heavy equipment including a backhoe and dump truck were immediately deployed to the area. These machines began the urgent work of backfilling the eroded portion of the creek to stabilize the embankment and prevent further soil movement, especially as the rainy season continues to intensify.
Mayor Lazatin emphasized the importance of acting swiftly to protect the safety of the community. “We cannot delay. The safety of our residents is our top priority, and we must reinforce the creek’s edges before more damage occurs,” he said during the visit. His directive was for continuous monitoring and accelerated repair work in vulnerable areas.
City engineers and personnel from the City Engineer’s Office (CEO) coordinated closely with local barangay officials to oversee the repairs and ensure that the work is done efficiently. They also conducted a preliminary assessment of other nearby sections of the creek to identify areas at risk of future erosion.
Residents in the Bliss area expressed relief and appreciation for the prompt response. Several locals mentioned that they had been concerned about the slope’s stability after recent rains, and were thankful that the city government had taken immediate action to prevent further incidents.
Aside from ongoing rehabilitation efforts, the city government plans to install temporary barriers and drainage improvements in the coming days to enhance the area’s resilience to future weather disturbances. These interventions are part of a long-term mitigation strategy to address erosion-prone zones throughout Angeles City.
The Angeles City Government continues to monitor other critical areas as part of its disaster preparedness efforts. Mayor Lazatin assured the public that the city remains on full alert and ready to act decisively in the face of any environmental threats, ensuring that residents remain safe during the wet season.
