Angeles City is taking significant steps to strengthen its animal welfare programs, following a recent meeting between Mayor Carmelo “Jon” Lazatin II and the City Veterinary Office. The office provided updates on current initiatives, highlighting progress in promoting responsible pet ownership and ensuring public health through animal-related services.
Mayor Lazatin reaffirmed his strong support for educating the public, especially students, on proper animal care. He emphasized that instilling compassion and responsibility among the youth is key to sustaining a community that values animal welfare.
In the same briefing, Mayor Lazatin also stressed the need to maintain the safety and quality of meat and poultry products sold and distributed in the city. He noted that the veterinary office plays a vital role in protecting consumer health through regular inspections and stringent standards.
Councilor NikNok Bañola, who chairs the Committee on Animal Welfare, joined the meeting to discuss the potential establishment of dog pounds in every barangay or clustered areas. This initiative seeks to enhance the city’s ability to manage stray animals humanely and more efficiently.
The city government believes that providing localized animal care facilities will reduce cases of animal neglect and improve overall public safety. Councilor Bañola expressed optimism that with the right support and planning, the proposal can be implemented in phases across Angeles.
Mayor Lazatin also called on compassionate residents to open their homes to rescued animals. He encouraged those capable to adopt pets from the city’s animal shelter, managed by the City Veterinary Office under Dr. Mar Samson’s leadership, and give these animals a permanent, loving environment.
With continued collaboration between the city government, local officials, and the community, Angeles City hopes to become a model city for animal welfare. The local administration remains committed to ensuring that all animals are treated with care and respect.
