In response to the recent increase in influenza-like illness (ILI) cases, the Angeles City Government, led by Mayor Carmelo “Jon” Lazatin II, has initiated strategic planning for a city-wide disinfection drive targeting public schools. The move aims to protect students and staff while ensuring that classes remain undisrupted.
A coordination meeting was held to lay out the framework for the planned disinfection, bringing together key agencies including representatives from the Department of Education – Schools Division Office of Angeles City, the Philippine National Police (PNP), and the City Epidemiology and Surveillance Unit (CESU). The goal is to conduct systematic misting and sanitation activities in school campuses.
Mayor Lazatin emphasized that the disinfection will be targeted, focusing on schools with reported cases or vulnerable populations to avoid unnecessary suspension of classes. A dedicated task force is currently being formed to implement the disinfection program efficiently and without disrupting the academic calendar.
Dr. Jessie Paul Culang of CESU reported that monitoring and surveillance efforts are ongoing and on track. The CESU has been actively gathering data on students and community members exhibiting ILI symptoms, ensuring early detection and response.
To support this effort, all Rural Health Units (RHUs) in Angeles City remain open and accessible for expanded testing. These centers are equipped to handle increased foot traffic from residents seeking consultation or testing for flu-like symptoms, further strengthening the city’s public health defenses.
In addition to health concerns, Mayor Lazatin has instructed the local police to step up information campaigns regarding recent bomb scare incidents reported in nearby areas. The campaign aims to dispel misinformation, reduce panic, and reassure both parents and school staff about the safety of students.
The Angeles City LGU reiterated its commitment to both health and safety, assuring residents that preventive measures are being put in place. With continued collaboration between local departments and schools, the city hopes to maintain a safe and healthy learning environment for all students.
