Angeles City continues to advance its push for greener and healthier communities with the recent distribution of 20 hydroponic units to four barangays—Tabun, Cutud, Sapalibutad, and Pampang. Spearheaded by Mayor Carmelo “Jon” Lazatin II through the City Agriculture Office, this initiative highlights the city’s commitment to sustainable backyard farming and food security.
The hydroponic units, which allow residents to grow vegetables without soil, were provided to help families cultivate their own nutritious food even in limited urban spaces. This modern farming technique promotes not only healthy eating but also provides a potential livelihood source for participating households.
“These units represent more than just farming equipment—they’re tools for empowerment,” said Mayor Lazatin. “By encouraging residents to grow their own food, we’re strengthening food resilience and promoting self-sufficiency in our communities.”
In addition to the hydroponic kits, gardening tools were handed over to the representative of Barangay Malabanias as part of their participation in the Gulayan sa Bayan regional competition. The support aims to enhance the barangay’s community garden and showcase best practices in urban agriculture.
The City Agriculture Office also provided training and demonstrations to ensure that recipients understand the basics of hydroponic farming, from planting to harvesting. This knowledge transfer is vital to ensure the long-term success of the project and to encourage more residents to take part in similar sustainable initiatives.
This move aligns with the broader environmental and health goals of the Angeles City LGU, which continues to integrate urban farming into its public service programs. By introducing new technologies like hydroponics, the city empowers communities to improve nutrition while caring for the environment.
Residents and barangay officials expressed appreciation for the support, noting how initiatives like these not only beautify their surroundings but also foster unity and cooperation within their neighborhoods. Angeles City plans to expand the program in the coming months, targeting more barangays for urban agriculture support.
