CLARK FREEPORT ZONE – Angeles City was recently honored by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources – Environmental Management Bureau (DENR-EMB) with an Excellence Award in Innovative Composting Practices during the Environmental Summit held on August 29, 2025, at Widus Hotel, Clark.
The award recognizes the city’s forward-thinking waste management initiative—particularly the implementation of the Black Soldier Fly (BSF) Program, led by the City Environment and Natural Resources Office (CENRO). The program uses Black Soldier Fly larvae to process biodegradable waste into eco-friendly, high-value products.
Through this initiative, Angeles City effectively diverts significant amounts of organic waste from landfills. The larvae break down biodegradable materials and, in turn, produce organic fertilizers and protein-rich feed for livestock and aquaculture—making the program both environmentally sound and economically beneficial.
City Administrator Atty. Noel Luzung and CENRO Chief Jenifer Castro personally accepted the award on behalf of Mayor Carmelo “Jon” Lazatin II. They expressed pride in the city’s recognition and reaffirmed the local government’s commitment to sustainable and science-driven environmental programs.
Mayor Lazatin has long championed the importance of environmental sustainability. Under his administration, the city has taken active steps toward reducing landfill dependency, promoting recycling, and investing in green technologies like BSF composting.
The BSF Program also serves as an educational platform, with CENRO conducting regular workshops and demonstrations to raise public awareness on modern composting methods and their benefits to agriculture and food security.
With this recognition, Angeles City cements its status as a leader in innovative environmental practices in the region. The award not only applauds current achievements but also sets a precedent for continuous improvement in waste management and ecological sustainability.
