In a continued effort to beautify the city and improve public safety, the Angeles City local government has partnered with major utility providers to remove unsightly and hazardous “spaghetti wires” from its main roads. The initiative is part of the “Clear Skies, Safer Streets” campaign, aimed at creating a more organized and secure urban environment for both residents and visitors.
The recent operation was conducted along Sto. Rosario Street, specifically at the intersection of Lakandula. The area is one of the city’s busiest routes, frequently used by pedestrians, public transport, and private vehicles. Clearing the tangled overhead wires not only improves aesthetics but also reduces risks of fire, electrocution, and service interruptions caused by fallen cables.
This citywide cleanup drive involves a strong collaboration between the Angeles City Engineering Office, the Angeles City Traffic Development Office (ACTDO), and several telecommunications and utility giants including AEC, PLDT-Smart, Globe, DITO, and Converge. Each group plays a vital role in mapping, identifying, and carefully dismantling unused or dangerous cables.
Mayor Carmelo “Pogi” Lazatin Jr. has expressed strong support for the project, emphasizing that public safety and urban renewal remain top priorities for his administration. “What we’re doing is not just about appearances. It’s about protecting lives and ensuring our city grows in a way that is smart, safe, and sustainable,” the mayor said in a statement.
Residents and business owners in the area have welcomed the move, noting how the clearer skies have improved visibility and given the neighborhood a cleaner, more modern look. Some even hope the project expands to cover secondary streets and interior barangays where tangled cables are still a problem.
This project follows national efforts that encourage local governments to streamline urban infrastructure and push for underground cabling in the long term. While undergrounding is a more costly and complex endeavor, clearing above-ground clutter is a crucial first step toward this vision.
Angeles City’s ongoing initiative is expected to continue in other major roads over the coming weeks. Authorities are advising the public to remain patient during the operations, as temporary disruptions may occur. In the end, however, the city aims to offer a safer, smarter streetscape for everyone.
