Angeles City celebrated its rich cultural roots with a lecture-workshop on Kulitan, the indigenous Kapampángan script, held at the Angeles City Library and Information Center Auditorium. The workshop provided participants with a hands-on opportunity to learn the fundamentals of reading and writing the ancient script while exploring its historical and cultural significance.
Organized by the Office of the Mayor–Kapampángan Language Services Unit, in partnership with Sínúpan Singsing: Center for Kapampángan Cultural Heritage and the Angeles City Tourism Office, the activity aimed to preserve and promote Kapampángan identity through its written tradition. The program reflects the city’s commitment to nurturing local heritage and educating its citizens about their cultural roots.
Participants engaged in practical exercises to practice Kulitan writing, guided by experienced instructors who shared the script’s unique structure and symbols. Beyond its technical aspects, the workshop emphasized Kulitan’s role as a symbol of Kapampángan pride and continuity, connecting modern Angeleños to their ancestral past.
The activity was free and open to the public, encouraging community members of all ages to participate. Families, students, teachers, and cultural enthusiasts attended, demonstrating a shared interest in keeping Kapampángan language and traditions alive. The inclusive approach ensured that both young and older generations could learn and appreciate this important cultural asset.
Mayor Carmelo “Jon” Lazatin Jr. expressed his support for the initiative, highlighting its role in fostering cultural awareness and civic pride. He emphasized that understanding one’s heritage strengthens community identity and inspires future generations to value and preserve their history.
The Kulitan workshop is part of Angeles City’s broader efforts to revitalize local languages and traditions, complementing other cultural activities and festivals that celebrate Kapampángan art, music, and performance. Through these programs, the city aims to ensure that its unique cultural heritage continues to thrive.
By reconnecting Angeleños with Kulitan and Kapampángan heritage, the city hopes to inspire a renewed appreciation for the region’s history and encourage continuous learning. The initiative reinforces the idea that culture is a living script—one that grows, adapts, and thrives when passed down and practiced by its people.
