Angeles City — The Department of Education (DepEd) Angeles City Schools Division, led by Schools Division Superintendent Engr. Edgard Domingo, paid a courtesy visit to Mayor Carmelo “Jon” Lazatin II to personally extend their gratitude for the city’s clear and consistent class suspension policy.
During the meeting held at the City Hall, Engr. Domingo thanked Mayor Lazatin for ensuring that announcements regarding class suspensions — whether due to storms, heavy rainfall, or extreme heat — are made with clarity and timeliness. This has been a great help to teachers, students, and parents alike, providing them with clear expectations and minimizing confusion.
Superintendent Domingo noted that Mayor Lazatin’s approach reflects a balanced commitment to both safety and learning continuity. While some may observe that the mayor is cautious in declaring class suspensions, it is because he carefully follows DepEd’s longstanding guidelines, which are designed to prepare schools in advance, especially during the rainy season.
The Schools Division head emphasized that frequent and unnecessary suspensions can impact educational quality. However, he also acknowledged the critical need to prioritize student safety. Mayor Lazatin’s clear-cut policy helps strike this balance — protecting learners without compromising instructional time.
For his part, Mayor Lazatin reaffirmed that both education and safety are among his top priorities. He shared that the local government always refers to DepEd protocols in making suspension decisions, ensuring that declarations are neither delayed nor made prematurely. The goal, he said, is to keep students safe while supporting their academic progress.
Mayor Lazatin also assured DepEd officials that the city remains proactive in communicating announcements to the public. Coordination with school heads, barangay officials, and media platforms is part of their standard procedure to keep all stakeholders informed.
The visit ended on a positive note, with both the LGU and DepEd expressing their shared commitment to student welfare. Superintendent Domingo commended the city’s consistent and data-informed response during weather disturbances and extended his appreciation on behalf of the entire Angeles City school community.
