ANGELES CITY, Pampanga — Mayor Carmelo “Pogi” Lazatin Jr. on June 17, 2025, personally handed out financial assistance to 123 deserving yet financially challenged students under the Special Program for Employment of Students (SPES). The distribution took place at the Liga ng mga Barangay Conference Room.
Accompanied by Irish Bonus-Llego, head of the Angeles City Economic Development and Investment Promotions Office, Mayor Lazatin expressed his support for youth development and education, emphasizing the city’s commitment to helping young Angeleños pursue their studies despite financial struggles.
The SPES initiative is a nationwide program by the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) designed to help poor but deserving students, out-of-school youth, and dependents of displaced workers. The program offers short-term employment opportunities during the summer break to help augment the income of families and support the education of the beneficiaries.
Through the program, student-participants not only earn income but also gain valuable workplace experience that can enhance their future employability. Mayor Lazatin noted that this dual benefit makes SPES an effective tool in preparing the youth for both academic and career advancement.
“The city government will always be a partner in building a better future for the youth,” Lazatin said, commending the students for their determination to pursue education despite financial hardships. He added that education remains a top priority of his administration.
Many of the students shared how the SPES allowance would help cover school expenses such as supplies, uniforms, and transportation. For some, it also lessens the financial burden on their parents, allowing them to focus more on their studies.
Since taking office, Mayor Lazatin has consistently supported programs that uplift the youth and underprivileged sectors of society. The SPES payout is part of his broader push for inclusive development, ensuring no student is left behind due to economic challenges.
