Angeles City — Mayor Carmelo “Jon” Lazatin II has committed to reviewing and prioritizing various education programs submitted by the Department of Education (DepEd) Angeles City, signaling the city government’s intent to boost the quality of education and provide better support to learners and educators.
The move came following a courtesy visit by Schools Division Superintendent Engr. Edgard Domingo and other DepEd officials to Mayor Lazatin. During the meeting, held at the city hall’s conference room, Superintendent Domingo presented a list of educational programs and needs that require the local government’s support for implementation.
Mayor Lazatin responded positively, stating that he will carefully assess each proposal and prioritize those that are both immediately impactful and financially feasible. “We need to be strategic in addressing educational needs,” Lazatin said. “Our goal is to deliver results by focusing on projects that are realistic and within our means, while planning for long-term improvements.”
Among the proposed priorities, the mayor placed strong emphasis on improving access to technology in public schools. He stressed the need for students to gain computer literacy skills, especially in preparation for digital assessments like the Philippine Educational Placement Test (PEPT). To support this, he is looking into the provision of shared computers in school laboratories.
Mayor Lazatin also acknowledged that while providing laptops for teachers remains important for lesson planning and online instruction, equipping students with computer skills must go hand-in-hand. “In today’s world, knowing how to use a computer is essential,” he noted. “By giving our students hands-on experience, we are preparing them not only for academic success but also for future job opportunities.”
Beyond technology, the mayor emphasized the broader goal of upgrading the entire education system in Angeles City. He expressed his vision of nurturing a generation of learners who are not only knowledgeable, but also capable of applying their learning to real-life challenges and nation-building efforts.
Mayor Lazatin reaffirmed the city’s commitment to supporting DepEd in uplifting education standards. He assured Superintendent Domingo that the city will continue to work closely with DepEd Angeles City to identify urgent needs, allocate resources efficiently, and create a better learning environment for all Angeleño students.
